Liminal Gardens is a small farm with a stand and small retail store in Waterborough, NB. We are dedicated to following permaculture design principles in our lifestyle and low-impact farming practices. We also aim to nurture a more local, more circular economy by selling the many crafts, art, and practical goods produced right here in our community or around the Maritimes.

The name “Liminal Gardens” reflects our vision to challenge the oppositional categories of wild versus farmed land. The delightful adjective “liminal” means, "Occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary." It signifies our intent to blur the wild/farmed categories by incorporating both into our property's design.
So we grow our crops in a range of conditions, from wild to cultivated. We forage some plants from wild areas on the property, encourage and manage the growth of beneficial wild species, introduce other edible perennials, and grow annual crops. (More on how we farm here.)
We also wish to challenge the notion that nature and civilization are in opposition. We strive to integrate ourselves into the ecosystems we inhabit. It’s a reciprocal and symbiotic relationship, not one marked by imposition and exploitation.
Exploitive land management has been a happy companion to the globalized industrial capitalism which has powerfully shaped the social, economic, and political structures of contemporary North American society. Fortunately there are alternatives to the North American status quo, and we hope to model one possibility.
