Liminal Gardens is a permaculture-based market farm, dedicated to growing high-quality produce in a way that has a net environmental benefit. We operate on a small scale and want to keep it that way.
The farm is managed by Sam and Brad with the "help" of our three free-ranging kids. Brad is most involved in the farm planning and activities, since Sam also works off-site during the week. We are first-generation farmers, working to bring more diversity of life to the land we inhabit.
Our decision to pursue permaculture and farming grew out of a desire for a life occupied by more traditional human activities, where we are more connected to our means of sustenance, and have more opportunities to be together as a family and in community. Ultimately we'd love this farm to grow into an intentional community in some form or other.
Along with other ecologically conscious farms around the province, we hope to provide an alternative to the short-sighted and destructive practices inherent in globalized industrial agriculture.
We want to farm in a way that rejuvenates the land, strengthens a community-based, circular economy, and provides high-quality produce and products for our customers.
Our main focus is on growing interesting varieties of fresh, nutritious veggies in production systems that utilize natural processes to build and maintain soil health. Thus, we never use pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or other problematic inputs.
We also forage food and medicinal plants from the property’s wild fields and forested areas. So along with typical market veggies, we will often have less common species available, many of which were traditional sources of food/medicine.
At times we will also have seedlings to sell, so people can get a start on their own gardens.
We keep a small flock of chickens on pasture, supplemented with local feed, so there are a limited number of eggs available each week.
Depending on the time of year, a variety of value-added products will also be available, such as foraged tea mixes, dried herbs, preserves, and kale chips. We also regularly bake small batches of sourdough bread, made with certified organic ingredients.
We hope the surplus of our homesteading activities provides an alternative for consumers looking to avoid the energy-intensive industrialized food systems that dominate the market.
